Farewell Address by George Washington
George Washington’s famous Farewell Address, actually a letter penned to the American people as he left office. In it he encourages unity and warns of foreign alliances, wars and of excessive party loyalty. This historic document is unique in that it was closely followed for one hundred years, after which all of its warnings were disregarded and American history took a dramatic shift.
Take Up the White Man’s Burden
Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem to America as they began to collect foreign territories and start an empire. He warns of the peril that faces nations embarking on empire building. The pitfalls and unwanted consequences of such an endeavor are sarcastically described in this poem.
